In 1999 Glenn A. Blakeney began the process of drafting a business plan to follow his long time dream of owning and operating his own radio station in Bermuda, although this initial effort never materialized it produced the blueprint for a visionary media company. One Sunday afternoon in January of 2002 a group of young men were discussing the pros and cons of present day Bermuda. There was a consensus that the current media companies especially radio were not serving the best interest of the community at large, particularly lacking was the quality, content and on air production. A participant in this discussion, R. Scott Pearman also harbored a dream of operating a radio station in Bermuda which had been spurred by family ties to Inner-City Broadcasting Company (WBLS FM NYC) and being a college disc jockey at the University of Rhode Island’s WRIU 93.5 FM in Kingston, RI. Having knowledge of the existence of Glenn Blakeney’s draft plan, Scott made inquires which resulted in the pair revisiting and creating a new business plan for two new radio stations to serve the Bermuda community.
In the summer of 2002, Glenn and Scott formed Inter-Island Communications Ltd which would be the holding company for the media company. A period of big dreams and no capital followed with the partners pursuing potential investors form New York to Texas, to the West Indies and many points in between. Ultimately our desire to put together the best possible team to launch the company Glenn recommended that we invite his long time friend and partner in entertainment events Elroy R.C. Smith, who was one the most renowned Urban Programme Directors in the United States. In the 1970s Glenn and Elroy got their start in radio under the tutelage of Sturgis Griffin on the Bermuda Broadcasting Company’s 1230 AM station. In October, 2003 Scott meet with Elroy in New York City where Elroy was being honored by the “Salute to Excellence” award that is a recording industry prize given to life long excellence in broadcasting. At the $500 a plate gala dinner attended by the major recording labels, Elroy received his award from Jennifer Lopez who thanked Elroy for breaking her first single.
