Inter-Island Communications News Brief October 6 2020

Six months following the disappearance of Chavelle Dillon Burgess, the Bermuda Police Service is continuing their island-wide systematic search efforts to find her. This from Detective Sergeant Jason Smith during an interview with Don Burgess on Bernews News and Views platform.

The global pandemic has changed the world in many ways, the delivery of education being one of them. Education Minister Diallo Rabain celebrated the effort and energy demonstrated by Bermuda’s educators in navigating these changes to ensure our kids are given the support and service they require, during the official World Teacher’s Day proclamation held on the steps of City Hall Monday afternoon.

This weekend was a rough one on our roads, featuring no less than three serious road traffic collisions in less than 24 hours between Saturday and Sunday night – with each incident leaving participants with serious injuries. According to BPS Assistant Commissioner Martin Weekes, two of the collisions took place on Saturday evening between quarter past eight and 10 – the first involving a car and motorcycle at the junction of Jennings and Middle Road, resulting in suspected internal injuries for the bike rider. The second on Saturday happened just after 10 pm, with a motorcyclist hitting a parked truck on Wellington Back Road, leaving him with a broken arm and head lacerations. Sunday at quarter to 9, two motorbikes struck one another on the causeway, both riders were knocked unconscious and one suffered a broken leg.

Assistant Commissioner Weekes shared that quote “I once again appeal to motorists and other road users, to exercise extreme caution when operating a vehicle. Stay within the speed limit. Do not drive whilst under the influence of alcohol, or drugs, prescribed or otherwise. Remember, driving on the island’s roads is a privilege and must be handled responsibly.”

Congratulations to Digicel for officially being confirmed as the Fastest Internet Provider in Bermuda in a global telecoms leader award ceremony. According to a representative the award was earned in the 2020 Ookla Speedtest Awards, saying quote “Ookla, the company behind Speedtest, is the global leader in fixed broadband and mobile network testing applications, data and analysis.”

Digicel Bermuda’s CEO Leslie Rans expressed gratitude at the accomplishment saying quote “We’re really thrilled to have received this award! I know how hard the team works, and how important it is to all of us that we provide our customers with the best possible service. Especially now, when reliable home services are needed more than ever. We are Bermuda’s only full-fibre home network which we invested heavily in to ensure that we deliver reliable speeds and future proof our network as consumer demand for bandwidth continues to grow year over year. This recognition not only validates our investment but is also a testament to the great employees we have working to ensure we give our customers the best experience.”
