The motorcar act is outdated and will be amended to better reflect the modern needs of the Bermudian community. This from Transport Minister Lawrence Scott during a press conference yesterday afternoon.
A police spokesperson said, “Shortly after 2:00 a.m. on Saturday 14th November, Police and Emergency Medical Services attended a report of a road traffic collision involving a private motorcar and a pedestrian, near The Dog House, on Front Street in the City of Hamilton. Officers at the scene reported that the pedestrian, a 47-year old male had sustained multiple injuries and was unresponsive, with one leg pinned underneath the vehicle. The victim was subsequently attended to at the scene by EMTs and transported via ambulance to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital for treatment to his injuries. Initial enquiries suggest a motorcar was being driven in a westerly direction along Front Street by a 27-year-old male when the victim stepped off the sidewalk into the path of the vehicle and was struck. The driver of the motorcar was arrested on suspicion of driving whilst impaired and later failed a breath test. The victim remains warded at KEMH with a fractured pelvis, facial injuries and road rash. Anyone with information on this incident is asked to call 211 or the main police number, 295-0011.″
A spokesperson said, “Bank of Bermuda Foundation announced that it has changed its name to Centennial Bermuda Foundation [Centennial] effective immediately and with that change, the organisation has also revealed a new logo. Centennial Bermuda Foundation is an independent, philanthropic foundation that grants more than $2.5 million to a wide range of non-profit initiatives in Bermuda annually and provides $950,000 in scholarships to individuals each year. Since it started, the organisation has invested more than $75 million in scholarships and community projects, large and small. The new name helps Centennial establish its own brand as the independent, private foundation that it is and while it has operated without affiliation to any organisation since 2004, this name change makes that clear. The name honours the past association and initial funding from the Bank of Bermuda’s Centennial Trust which was created in 1990 to commemorate the bank’s 100th anniversary and was established to support the community.”
Centennial Bermuda Foundation Chair, Tom Conyers shared that quote “The organisation has been evolving in recent years with a vision that all people in Bermuda be healthy, independent, financially secure and connected to the community, with equitable opportunities for all.”
