Inter-Island Communication News Brief - August 5 2019

A police spokesperson said, “Around 9:15 am Thursday, August 1st police officers responded to a report of a man on the roof at a Wellington Back Road, St. George’s residence.

“At first the 24-year-old male resident was apparently on the roof naked, which was captured on video and shared via social media.

“However, on police arrival, he was fully clothed, spoken with and came down from the roof without incident.

“The 24-year-old man was transported to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital by a family member in a private vehicle for medical assessment.”

Cup Match 2019 ended in a draw, prematurely so after Dion Stovell was struck in the head by the ball while attempting to play a ball bowled by Justin Pitcher.

The Somerset batsman collapsed instantly, medics rushed the pitch to provide him with the necessary care and every single player and fan gathered at the Wellington Oval hoped that the fallen Somerset player would be ok as soon as possible.

Basically, Somerset had been able to bowl out St George’s for 154 runs. At that point, St. George’s were carrying a 132-run lead ahead of Somerset’s 11 over deep opportunity to gather up sufficient runs to reach the point of what was a pretty unlikely victory at the end of the innings.

Somerset’s Captain Jordan Desilva did some meaningful work, recording his Cup Match best score by earning a 77 before being caught out by Allan Douglas off a ball from Macai Simmons. Somerset dug deep to earn 315 runs responding to St George’s 296/7 declared.

According to Wendell Smith, the St George’s coach quote “After the first day, I felt very confident that if we took our catches we could win this match and sure enough that didn’t play out,” We dropped at least seven catches and people who went on to get half-centuries would’ve never done that had we played characteristic of a St George’s team normally as far as our catches.

“We would’ve been in this game and probably in the driver’s seat with maybe a 50-run lead, but as it turned out we had a deficit.”

Congratulations and thank you to a lighthouse keeper and a community member who heroically supported a man down from the edge of jumping from the top of Gibbs Hill Lighthouse.

Reportedly, the two talked to the 58-year-old man until police negotiators arrived at the lighthouse to finally get him safely down the 117ft-high installation.

A police spokesman shared quote: “The lighthouse keeper and a member of the public intervened until police officers arrived on the scene a short time later, with police negotiators eventually getting the man to come down from the lighthouse without incident.

“He was then taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital for medical assessment.”

This incident, sadly, is not the first we’ve seen – as you’ll recall, in December 2015, a 72-year-old man died after falling from the top of the lighthouse. Investigators weren’t definitive in confirming whether the incident was intentional or accidental.

A police spokesperson said, “Around 10 am Thursday, August 1st police officers responded to reports of willful damage in the City of Hamilton/Pembroke area.

“The offensive graffiti, which threatened violence to police officers during Cup Match, was found spray-painted at:

  • Dundonald Street
  • Happy Valley Road
  • Junction of Beacon Street and Angle Street
  • Cedar Avenue

“The graffiti was documented and inquiries continue.

“Any witnesses or members of the public with relevant information are encouraged to call the main police telephone number 295-0011 at the earliest opportunity.”
