Inter-Island Communications News Brief - June 22, 2021

The need to extend the public health emergency is necessitated by the ongoing pandemic conditions, and is underscored by the prior success we had in mitigating COVID-19 and the impact of falling behind. This from Premier David Burt during Friday’s Parliamentary sitting.

The extension of the public health emergency for another eight weeks is to ensure we’re nationally capable of dealing with worst case possibilities – not to extend the specific regulations that were scaled back this weekend. This from Premier David Burt during Friday’s Parliamentary sitting.

The House of the Mouse is sailing to Bermuda in Fall of next year. The Disney Cruise Line has published their Fall 2020 calendar and the list of destinations set to be visited by the Disney Magic includes Bermuda. Disney Magic started visiting the island in 2018, but has been unable to travel to Bermuda – or any other destination – as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and its associated travel restrictions.

The official release on the announcement reads in part that quote “With cruises departing from Florida, New York, Texas and California, guests will have many opportunities to experience holidays at sea with Disney Cruise Line. The Disney Magic returns to New York in late September for a series of Halloween on the High Seas sailings to Bermuda and Canada. Guests can visit Bermuda’s pink sand beaches and colorful coral reefs on five-night vacations or set their sights for a special six-night cruise to the Canadian ports of New Brunswick and Halifax that includes a stop in Bar Harbor, Maine.”

Bermuda’s 8 national heroes – Mary Prince, Dr. E.F. Gordon, Dame Lois Browne-Evans, Gladys Misick Morrell, Sir John W. Swan, Dr. Pauulu Kamarakafego, Sir Henry Tucker and Sir E.T. Richards were honored over the weekend to celebrate National Heroes Day 2021.

The concert event took place at Victoria Park and was hosted by Youth, Culture and Sport Minister Dr. Ernest Peets who said quote “Although each of our eight heroes are very different in terms of their spheres of influence, each of their stories tell a part of Bermuda’s story. Each of their areas of personal and professional excellence provides us with part of a national origin story that we can mine for strength, wisdom, inspiration and resilience during times of hardship. For example, Dr. E.F. Gordon taught us the power of collective action. Mary Prince’s remarkable story taught us the importance of personal strength and independent thought. And Dame Lois Browne Evans taught us about the importance of fighting for justice. These sacrifices and triumphs gifted Bermuda with a significant and enduring national story. That story has strengthened the iron in our spines – providing us with the capability to overcome adversity, to endure, and to prosper.
